Originating from a French textile studio in the late 1920s, Sonia 1927 emerged during a period of intense experimentation in decorative design, when artists and textile houses blurred the boundaries between fine art, fashion, and interiors. Painterly blooms unfold through rhythmic pattern and softened forms, balancing modernist structure with organic movement. The design reflects the influence of early decorative abstraction and the spirited experimentation associated with textile artists such as Sonia Delaunay, where colour and pattern become inseparable elements of composition.

Printed using a seven-plate colour process, each layer was aligned by hand, allowing slight shifts in registration to create the softly mottled effect distinctive to the design. According to studio records, the pattern was later reissued in 1938 following renewed interest from couture houses seeking modern yet romantic textile motifs.

The composition would have translated beautifully onto furnishing fabrics or lightweight silk, its botanical forms lending themselves naturally to the relaxed elegance of contemporary dress.
